Divide the total weight load
(including the cart or hand truck)
by the number of casters supporting the load
to determine the load per caster.

Our load ratings include a substantial safety factor. However, if the casters are to be subjected to unusual shock or impact, at least the next greater caster capacity is advised. Listed load ratings are dynamic based on in-house test specifications.

Determine the type of wheel best suited for your application.
  • Wheel Size: Large wheels roll more easily, are generally more maneuverable and ride more easily over obstructions and floor ruts than smaller diameter wheels.
  • Wheel Hardness: Hard tread wheels will carry heavier loads, and normally require less starting force than soft tread wheels. Soft wheels ride more easily over bumps, and are normally preferred on tile, linoleum and other hard floor surfaces as they are quieter, provide better floor protection, shock absorption and traction.
  • Wheel Material: Where applications include exposure to oils, grease, acid solutions or other unusual environmental conditions, special wheel materials may be required. Please inquire.

Determine the best combination of swivel and rigid casters.
  • Four swivel casters permit instant response to change in direction.
The castered vehicle can be easily parked in limited space.
  • A combination of two rigid casters with two swivel casters restricts mobility somewhat, but allows easier steering over long distances.

Determine the top portion most suitable for the application.
There are three primary methods of attaching casters:
  • Top plate mounting
  • Stem/socket
  • Stem without socket
